How to judge a marketing agency before you sign anything

Everyone's pitch sounds the same

Data-driven. Results-focused. Full service. Partner rather than vendor. Every agency in Texas has a version of the same deck, and none of it distinguishes a good one from an expensive one.

What does distinguish them is how they answer a small number of awkward questions, and how a contract is structured.

Ask who owns the accounts

Your Google Ads account, your analytics, your domain, your site. If any of those live inside an agency-owned account, leaving means starting over, and both sides know it. That imbalance shapes every conversation afterwards.

The right answer is that everything is created in your name and you have administrator access from day one. Any hesitation here tells you most of what you need to know.

Ask what happens if it does not work

Not as a threat, but as a real question. A good answer describes a review point, an honest assessment, and a way out. A bad answer is a twelve month minimum term and reassurance that it takes time.

Things do take time. That is not the same as being unable to tell at ninety days whether the work is heading somewhere.

Ask to see a report for a client like you

Ask to see a report for a client like you

Anonymised is fine. What you are looking for is whether the report explains what was done, what it produced, and what happens next, in language you can follow without help. If it is forty pages of platform screenshots, that is what your monthly experience will be.

Ask who does the work

The person in the pitch is often not the person on the account. That is not automatically wrong, but you should know, and you should meet whoever it will be. Ask directly how many accounts that person handles.

Watch for guarantees

Nobody controls search rankings, and anyone guaranteeing a position is either misunderstanding their own business or counting on you not to check what they guaranteed. Guaranteed first page for a term nobody searches is a common trick and technically true.

What can reasonably be committed to is scope, timeline, communication, and honest reporting. Those are worth more than a promise nobody can keep.

  • Who owns the accounts and the data
  • What the exit terms are
  • What a real monthly report looks like
  • Who is doing the work day to day
  • What is in scope and what triggers an extra cost
  • What they would do first, and why that first
